get a refund from your gym

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.  – Plato

*do not, under any circumstances, pay upfront for a year-long membership at your gym unless you know for sure that you’re going to want to be a member for a year!*

you would think that’d be obvious, right?  not so much!  basically, i joined a gym for a year even though i knew i’d most-likely cancel the membership after four months.  the manager at my gym told me i could cancel without issue.

he lied.

the good news is, i’ve managed to talk/type myself into a refund.

it just a lot of effort.

to summarize.  to cancel a gym membership:

  1. don’t even bother planning to tell the truth.
  2. engineer a bill to look like it’s being sent to alaska or some other far-away place in case the gym asks for proof that you moved.
  3. or, actually have a bill sent to a friend in a far-away place so they can scan it and email it back to you as ‘proof’
  4. look on blogs to find actual contacts that can help you cancel your membership and email those contacts directly, attaching the ‘proof.’
  5. also attach a copy of your original contract.
  6. send positive thoughts into the universe so that these people actually get back to you and refund your money.
  7. immediately plan to join a new gym where you will probably join for a year to avoid those pesky initial feels. – some people never learn!
